What Is IOSH Managing Safely?
IOSH Managing Safely is a globally recognised health and safety qualification accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) — the world's largest health and safety professional body with over 47,000 members across 130 countries.
The course is designed for managers and supervisors in any sector, providing the knowledge and skills to manage health and safety within their teams and comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
Course Duration and Format
IOSH Managing Safely is delivered over 3 days and can be completed via classroom, virtual classroom or e-learning. The course includes a multiple-choice assessment and a workplace risk assessment project.
The 7 Module Syllabus
- Introducing Managing Safely — The moral, legal and financial reasons for managing safety. Key terminology and the principles of health and safety management.
- Assessing Risks — Risk assessment methodology, risk rating, and the principles of risk control under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
- Controlling Risks — Hierarchy of risk control, preventive and protective measures, and how to implement effective controls in the workplace.
- Understanding Responsibilities — Legal framework including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Health and Safety (Offences) Act 2003, and the role of enforcement bodies (HSE, local authorities).
- Identifying Hazards — Common workplace hazards including manual handling, hazardous substances (COSHH), fire, electricity, working at height, and workplace transport.
- Investigating Incidents — Accident investigation techniques, root cause analysis, RIDDOR reporting requirements, and near-miss reporting.
- Measuring Performance — Health and safety performance indicators, active and reactive monitoring, auditing, and continuous improvement.
