Weekly Compliance Update: 27 October 2026
Hello everyone, Mark here from Livius Training. It has been a busy few weeks in the world of health and safety, and I wanted to cut through the noise to highlight what actually matters for your business right now. If you have been keeping an eye on the headlines, you will have seen that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is not slowing down on enforcement.
The most pressing development this month is the HSE’s new campaign launched on 13 October, focusing on noise and vibration. They are warning employers not to wait for symptoms like tinnitus or hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) to appear before taking action. With an estimated 15,000 workers developing hearing problems caused by work every year, the HSE is making it clear: if your staff are exposed to loud machinery or vibrating tools, you need to be proactive, not reactive.
Furthermore, for those of you in the construction or property sector, remember that the Building Safety Levy officially came into force on 1 October 2026. This is a significant change for residential developments in England, and local authorities are now collecting this through the building control process. You cannot get final building control approval—or occupy a building—until this levy is paid.
It is easy to feel overwhelmed by these updates, but compliance is really about protecting your people. Whether it is managing noise risks or ensuring your team is properly trained, the goal is always the same: making sure everyone gets home safe at the end of the day.
What you should do this week
If you are feeling a bit behind on your safety obligations, don't panic. Here are three practical steps you can take right now:
- Review your noise and vibration assessments: Don't wait for an inspector to knock. Check if your current control measures are actually working or if they are just paperwork on a shelf.
- Check your training records: Are your staff trained to use the specific equipment they operate? We have seen recent prosecutions where a lack of documented training led to massive fines and even director disqualification.
- Audit your residential projects: If you are involved in building, ensure your team is aware of the new Building Safety Levy requirements to avoid delays in your building control sign-off.
