What Is DSE Training?
Display Screen Equipment (DSE) training is required under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992. These regulations apply to any employee who regularly uses display screen equipment (computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones) as a significant part of their normal work.
Who Is a DSE User?
An employee is classed as a DSE user if they:
- Use DSE continuously for periods of an hour or more at a time
- Use DSE on a daily basis
- Have to transfer information quickly to or from the DSE
Employer Duties Under DSE Regulations 1992
- Conduct a DSE workstation assessment for each user
- Reduce risks by ensuring workstations meet minimum requirements
- Provide DSE training and information
- Provide eye tests and corrective appliances if required
- Ensure adequate breaks or changes of activity
- Provide adjustable chairs and suitable lighting
DSE Workstation Assessment Checklist
- Screen: Adjustable height and angle, no glare or reflections, clean and legible text
- Keyboard: Separate from screen, adjustable position, space in front for wrists
- Mouse: Positioned close to keyboard, appropriate for the user
- Chair: Adjustable height and back, provides lumbar support, stable base
- Desk: Sufficient surface area, appropriate height, free from clutter
- Lighting: Adequate, no glare on screen, suitable for reading documents
- Environment: Adequate space, temperature, humidity, minimal noise
Health Risks of Poor DSE Use
- Musculoskeletal disorders — Neck, back, shoulder and arm pain
- Eye strain — Headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, fatigue
- Stress and fatigue — From intense screen work without breaks
- Repetitive strain injury (RSI) — From poor posture and repetitive movements
How Often Should DSE Training Be Refreshed?
DSE training should be refreshed at least annually or when there are significant changes to the workstation, equipment or working arrangements (e.g., transition to hybrid working or hot-desking).
