EFAW vs FAW: Which First Aid Course Do I Need?
Choosing between Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) depends on your workplace risk level and the number of employees you have. Both are HSE-recognised qualifications under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
EFAW is a 1-day course covering essential emergency first aid skills:
- CPR and use of an AED (defibrillator)
- Choking management
- Bleeding and wound management
- Burns and scalds
- Shock (anaphylaxis and hypovolaemic)
- Seizures
- Unconscious casualty management and recovery position
- Minor injuries
Best for: Low-risk workplaces such as offices, shops, libraries and small businesses with fewer than 50 employees.
First Aid at Work (FAW)
FAW is a 3-day comprehensive course covering all EFAW content plus:
- Fractures and dislocations
- Spinal injuries and head injuries
- Poisoning
- Eye injuries
- Chest injuries
- Major illnesses (stroke, heart attack, diabetes, asthma)
- Burns and scalds (advanced management)
- Hypothermia and heat exhaustion
Best for: Higher-risk workplaces such as construction, manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, and workplaces with more than 50 employees.
Key Differences Summary
- Duration: EFAW = 1 day; FAW = 3 days
- Depth: EFAW covers emergencies only; FAW covers emergencies plus comprehensive injury and illness management
- Cost: EFAW typically £45-£75; FAW typically £195-£250
- Certification: Both are HSE-recognised and valid for 3 years
Which Course Should I Choose?
Conduct a first aid needs assessment considering:
- Workplace risk level (office vs construction site)
- Number of employees
- Distance from emergency services
- History of accidents
- Specific workplace hazards
For most low-risk offices, EFAW is sufficient. For higher-risk environments or larger workforces, FAW is recommended.
